NEW COMPETITION RULES 2008/2009 (revised July 2008).
Summary
Throughout the year there will be 13 league (5 print, 4 projected image and 4 slide) plus 4 trophy competition evenings. At the end of the year will be 1 evening dedicated to the Annual Competition.
a) League Competitions
- Each competition will be Open subject.
- Competition evenings will comprise of monochrome and colour prints (monochrome to mean one colour plus base paper colour), slides and projected image.
- There will be two judging classes in each section – Entry-Level and Advanced/Premier.
- Each photographer can enter up to 2 entries plus a reserve in each section. Reserves will be included in the evening’s competition if there are not sufficient entries. Entries can only ever be used once in league competitions. An unused reserve can be resubmitted in another competition.
- Each entry will be marked out of 10 (with half marks). Entry-level and Advanced/Premier will be judged separately.
- The name of the photographer of any image scoring 8 and above will be announced.
- The top entry of the evening in each section will receive a certificate of recognition. In the event of more than one image scoring maximum points the judge will select the overall best image of the evening.
- Scores count towards positions in league tables, of which there will be seven:

- For the first year of the projected digital image competition there will be two leagues only.
- Only the photographer’s top 2 scores in the slide and projected image section of each competition will count towards the league position. In the print section only the top scoring image from each photographer will count towards the league position to promote quality over quantity.
- The top photographer in each league wins a trophy. The top two Advanced photographers will be promoted to the Premier league with the bottom two dropping back into the Advanced. The top two Entry-Level photographers will be promoted to the Advanced. There will be no dropping back into the Entry-Level leagues. The overall Photographer of the Year will be selected by the committee and will be someone who merits the award.
b) Trophy Competitions
- Each trophy evening will comprise one subject. For the 2008/2009 season subjects will be Animals, Birds and Plants, Landscape/Seascape, Portrait/Figure and Any Other Subject.
- There will be 2 sections to each trophy competition – print and slide. Prints may be colour or monochrome.
- Each competitor can enter up to 2 entries plus a reserve in each section.
- Each section marked by judge as 1,2,3 and up to 3 highly commended.
c) Annual Competition
- The intent of the annual competition is to find the best-of-the-best.
- Open subject.
- There will be 3 sections (monochrome print, colour print and slide (and possibly digitally projected image)).
- Entries will be pre-judged. The judge will comment on each entry at his/her discretion.
- Each section marked by the judge as 1,2,3 and up to 3 highly commended dependant on the number of entries.
- Trophies will be presented for each 1st place with certificates for the remainder of placed entries, if there is sufficient number.
COMPETITION RULES 2008-2009
General rules for all competitions
- Prints and transparencies entered into any Benfleet Camera Club
competition prior to 6 September 2004 are not eligible for the current competition
format including projected image.
- All prints to be a minimum size 10 inches x 8 inches up to a maximum of 20 inches x 16 inches including the mount.
- All prints to be mounted.
- Only a title may appear on the front of the mount.
- Name of the photographer, section and class to be on the back of any print, plus the title.
- Transparencies may be either 50 x 50mm or 60 x 60mm.
- Transparencies must be correctly spotted and have the name of the photographer, section and class on the mount, plus the title.
- Transparencies must be in a suitable mount for projection. (i.e.not cardboard).
- Digitally produced work may be entered in print, slide and projected image competitions. Images and digital manipulation must be entirely the work of the photographer.
- All entries must be suitably packaged.
- All entries to be handed in at least one week in advance of the competition. This may be altered at the discretion of the Competition Secretaries.
- Prints, transparencies and projected digital images may only be entered once in the Annual Competition, once in any League Competition and once in any one of the other Trophy Competitions (not a second League Competition). No time limit will apply to the span of the three entries. Any print or transparency previously entered as above, or so similar as to be taken from a previous entry, will be ineligible
- An image may only be submitted three times, regardless of format (including projected digital image).
- All reasonable care will be taken, but the Club and its Officers cannot accept any responsibility for loss or damage to any entry in any competition.
- Promotion from the Entry-Level to the Advanced, and Advanced to Premier, in the Print and Transparency sections will be determined by the final league placing at the end of the season. See League Competition section.
- Projection and hanging of any entry is at the discretion of the Committee.
- The Committee will decide the appropriate league for new competitors and may base this on a sample of work.
NOTE: There are no restrictions on the number of times a photograph can be used
by the Club in inter-Club competitions, but only once in any particular
competition, e.g. the Basildon Rose Bowl.
